Important Details: In one of the most improbable election results in modern America, Donald Trump has defied the opinion polls to win the presidential election. The last few weeks have been nutty in the land of media.  First, news in the news: The Guardian and Daily Mail eliminated jobs. DMGT announced 50 million GBP in cuts. The New York Times said more downsizing in the newsroom is on the way and the Wall Street Journal offered buyouts while trying to limit involuntary layoffs in the newsroom. They also gave the newspaper a haircut, announcing the consolidation of sections to eliminate printing costs. Print advertising is continuing to downturn, just when everyone thought it might stabilize but at the end of the day FANG is siphoning off a lot of...

The world has been full of venerable brands doing something awful, taking a hit, and recovering. GM’s ignition switch and Mary Barra’s response. The J&J Tylenol scandal. Moons ago gas tanks blowing up in Ford Pintos. Recently, VW’s emissions scandal and Chipotle’s supply chain challenges poisoning patrons, have added to the annals of corporate branding Glamour Don’ts while Wells Fargo is in the midst of cleaning up its act. Not good. But, Samsung? My gosh, what have they done? For the last month I’ve flown too many times to count. I’ve been on United Airlines, Virgin, Air France, Aegean,...

Go away for a few weeks and brand havoc is sure to rear its head in this industry. With all the M&A, consolidation, roll-ups, and PE firms in the mix, names seem to change about every week or so. The week of Outsell’s Signature Event, ThomsonReuters Intellectual Property & Science (a mouthful for sure) announced the completion of its sale and with it the requisite name change: Clarivate Analytics. Ok, I get Clarify, or Clarity, and Innovation breeding to make Clarivate. It wouldn’t be my favorite name but I can see the logic given what TR IP & Science does. But adding Analytics...

For those of you on the hunt for my white sweater you can breathe easily knowing it’s finally been found! Some of you remarked about how worthwhile it was that I had an entire army of information industry veterans on the lookout for me and two of my colleagues sent me links right after that post – both to sweaters I hadn’t seen online. Unfortunately they didn’t work out. One, linen and made in my home state of Cali, looked like a kimono it turns out, and two colleagues who tried it on, also nixed it. The other, looked like a winner, but alas, it came having been made in China after all, and...

Meet my new Trimline. Gotta love that beauty – the iPhone of its time – smooth, sleek, great lines, functional – simple elegance at its best. It rings and you pick up a call. You press a few buttons and it makes one.  Amazing. Meet my new clock.  Smooth black corners, with an easy dial to read, it doesn’t light up the room with bright red, green, or blue ambient light. It’s quiet. It tells time. It’s got a little button to push if you want to check the time at night. It’s got an alarm. It doesn’t talk back. It doesn’t tell me directions, and it can’t make a phone call, or search Google. But...

Anand Sanwal, Data Connoisseur & CEO at CB Insights started a you-know-what-storm a couple of weeks ago when he took on the big research and advisory firms and his clients to boot.  The company is fun, has well-deserved swagger, and his newsletters and content marketing are second to none. He and his firm are on a roll. People love following him, love the ‘cruncher’ and love their transparency about their machine-generated data and how they run their content marketing engine. They are hot and they are in vogue. I admit I’m even a little jealous as we’ve been on a public effort to get the...

We’re buttoned down, making our lists and checking them twice as the final registrations for Outsell’s Signature Event come through. From 15 amazing keynotes each focusing on a major key to Success Beyond the Tipping Point, to an incredible roster of attendees, this promises to be a great celebration and fabulous 10th year anniversary event.   How nice to co-produce this event with Wilma Jordan, Founder and CEO of JEGI, and her team.  A true partnership...

Once upon a time there was a Fortune 500 conglomerate that made everything from light bulbs to appliances to jet engines. They had highly profitable divisions in media and financial services. At the time, a man named Jack, who had earned a reputation as a management guru around the globe, led the company. It was an amazing company — well respected, a household name, and revered in business. As the story unfolded, the company re-imagined itself under new leadership as a post 2009 world evolved. From eco-imagination to divestiture and “deconglomeration,” the company went on a journey, putting...
