Each year Outsell invests millions in tracking and analyzing information, media, and data industries to help executives and their organizations grow and thrive. Whether we’re looking at competitive disruption and interesting new business models, customers’ changing demands, or best practices (like how well sales functions respond), we keep our finger on the pulse of the industry. Our research shows that clients outperform the industry on average, and we love the congruity of information executives being open to information. You’d be surprised at those who say they don’t need outside...

Let me start this out with the proviso that I don’t like to use phrases like “the media.” It paints an entire set of professionals and businesses with a single brush stroke, and the space is much too nuanced for this. Yet, day in and day out, we’re struck by the hyperbole about “the media,” and it’s getting worse, especially when the Meryl Streep’s of the world stand up and say, the media is under assault … or, our President-elect tweets about the evils of “the media.”   Stereotypes, at a certain level, are helpful guideposts. There is some truth in them, but not “the truth.” When we use them...

The old adage “where there is a will, there is a way” reminds me of Outsell’s experience with the information industry: where there is a subject, there is information. Just about every topic known to man has some kind of information source supporting it, and boy is it getting ever more specific in our data-driven analytics world. Years ago, I joked with our team about the specificity that goes with our industry. Whether esoteric scholarly journal titles, magazines focused on very narrow audiences, or today, out on the web, there is a topic being followed for just about anything on the planet...

We love Medium, and it’s too bad it’s become caught in business-model crosshairs. Valued at $600 million less than a year ago, it laid off one-third of its workforce and closed offices in New York and Washington DC. The company said it was no longer happy with the advertising-based path it was on (slippery slope for sure), so it pulled back to restart or re-evaluate its revenue model, a fundamental for sure. Especially with big investors in its back pocket. Medium no doubt ok’d the move, but tough going when big valuations follow with this kind of news. We think Ev and company started to feel...

Wow! Nothing like bullish moves to set the stage for a fast-start to 2017. Gartner became the pace car for what’s ahead by announcing its $2.6 billion acquisition of CEB almost as soon as the ball had dropped on Times Square. We were no sooner finished analyzing that big news, when D&B bought Avention for $150 million. Two big brands buying two big brands. And on the heels of Informa buying Penton late last fall, we know one thing is for sure — consolidation continues its steady march in this industry. We will see more big name deals because that’s what it takes to move the needle these...

How pleased we are that Outsell is once again ahead of its time, picking a brand color several years ago that is this year’s Pantone Color of the Year! Greenery, I couldn’t believe it when our head of marketing popped it over and thought how fun! Love it. Long have we used this color to reflect our core mission of helping the information industry grow revenue and thrive. And it stands too for our continued expansion into serving and covering emerging companies who are all emblematic of hope and aspiration in our never ending changing industry.   How nice too that the color is symbolic of...

Important Details Before we button up the year, check our list twice, and head out for the holidays, we’ve reviewed the most significant headlines of 2016 and what they mean for the year ahead. What a tradition this has become, and one that confirms, with no shortage of events, our stance from over a year ago that 2016 would be the year of the Tipping Point. In no particular order: 1) Copyright Pressures Intensify: Sci-Hub, a pirate site for scholarly literature that offers free access to upwards of 47 million scientific and scholarly papers, generated heated debates and lawsuits. It also...

In a week full of stories about fake news, including our Insight written by Outsell’s Barry Parr, and my last blog post about the big losers in the election, the media and pollsters, imagine my dismay when my email exchange with Mr. Carl Nolte, columnist at the SF Chron who I cited in that post went like this. I was upset by the column he wrote the week of the election and the two quotes below in particular, which I cited in my last post. So I sent him an email:   It’s pretty hard to see more of the west coast hubris in your article this morning Carl. I normally like your column. "We are not...

Wanting to let the dust settle after last week’s big events, I decided to let a few days synch in between Trump’s win and when I put pen to paper or fingers to keys. The week was an amazing one. First Samsung announces its phones are not only dangerous, but so are their washing machines. My sister is the beneficiary of a recall notice and apparently the thing runs amok on the bedding cycle. Some poor guy had his jaw broken and there have been other injuries too. The hilarious thing (or maybe not so) is that this machine was a replacement she insisted on when two prior GE washers kept going...
