It’s a conundrum.
It’s essential to be ‘global’ in a networked world, but is it possible to be global when you also must be local? Can ‘niche’ work at scale? How do you do this when language requirements, cultural norms, and regulatory environments all differ, and how do you do it when mobile devices, desktops, and screens in homes and cars play a role?
Years ago, I recall a speaker at Outsell’s Signature Event discussing their foray into legal information services and the challenges faced when scaling to other countries. Their company went from a local service provider to an international one, eventually becoming a global provider. The speaker also talked about how crucial deep pockets are to open markets. Wolters Kluwer has done an amazing job with UpToDate and migrating this essential service to a broader set of geographic markets.
On one hand, it’s easier than ever to find, curate, create, and distribute content or software enabled content solutions. On the other, it’s hard to manage market inconsistencies. Education is highly localized, and, therefore, its solutions must also be developed locally. News is highly localized, and it’s essential – our 11th key to success is to understand how you will play in a global digital economy.
Cover your region for your region. Cover your region for other regions. Cover other regions for your region. Cover all regions for all regions.
We asked Norman Pearlstine to address these questions. He’s an experienced executive, having worked at companies such as Bloomberg, The Carlyle Group, The Wall Street Journal, and Forbes. He is now the Vice Chairman of Time Inc. and previously it’s Chief Content Officer. Time has almost universal access as a brand, and is global, but it must address the needs of local advertisers and consumers. Pearlstine has worked in professional information sectors and the consumer space, and I can’t wait to hear him share his views on how to scale the core to local adjacencies.
Go global by being global – CEOs, COOs, Presidents and Managing Directors won’t want to miss this essential topic at Outsell’s 10th Anniversary Signature Event co-produced with JEGI. Register here.
