PCs AND THEIR USE IN UK HOUSEHOLDS IN LATE 1998
- Data collected by the Office for National Statistics via face-to-face interviews carried out in the latter half of 1998 show that 36 per cent of respondents (one only per household) had access to a PC at home.
- Of those who did not have access to a PC at home, 14 per cent expected to have such access within two years.
- Across the country as a whole, access to a PC varied regionally, from 25 per cent of households in Scotland to 47 per cent in the south east.
- Of respondents with access to a PC at home, 77 per cent had a CD-ROM drive and, of those, 65 per cent used CD-ROM to access information.
- Of respondents with access to a PC at home, only 44 per cent had a modem (or equivalent) link and, of these, 33 per cent never used the facility.
- EPS considers that the penetration of PCs in UK homes will reach the 50 per cent level in 2000 and close to 75 per cent by 2003.
- By 2003, more than 90 per cent of home PCs will have a CD or DVD drive.
- Despite increasingly propitious conditions, connectivity will spread more slowly, arriving at about 58 per cent of households by 2003.
