Houghton Mifflin has been a publishing institution and a cornerstone of Boston business for 169 years. However, starting in 2001, the company's fortunes turned so that now, just eight years later, its future is in question. Houghton changed hands a number of times, mostly recently in 2006 when Riverdeep Group, controlled by Barry O'Callaghan, bought the company for $3.4 billion. Soon after, O'Callaghan went on a buying spree that included Harcourt for $4 billion. These acquisitions were done with borrowed money, and now the bill is due.
