IT alignment as a concept does not involve new methodologies or tools; instead, it provides an approach for coordinating and leveraging IT planning and evaluation activities historically undertaken in isolation from one other. Institutions that believe they have high levels of IT alignment report dynamic or stable environmental climates and greater levels of communication.
Looking ahead, the growing cost and complexity of deploying and supporting campus information technologies, the need to maintain robust IT in order to remain competitive with peer institutions, and the emerging theme of accountability will all drive future IT developments.
