SIIA and Outsell, Inc. Work Together to Raise the Profile of the Information Industry

  • Newest Estimates Place Industry at $250 Billion

Washington, D.C. - April 13, 2005 -The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal trade association for the software and digital content industry, and Outsell, Inc., the leading research and advisory firm providing actionable market analytics for the information industry, today announce the latest milestone in their long-standing marketing partnership. They jointly announce the results of a project to size and define this industry that encompasses publishers, commercial information providers and content software technology vendors. While the industry is familiar in some pieces, it is relatively unknown as an aggregate.

Outsell has begun providing market sizing data by information industry subsectors-looking at year-over-year revenues and percentage of revenue growth. The data will help the information industry bring this sometimes "invisible" sector to the forefront by promoting its size and economic power.

"The business information industry has remained in the shadow of consumer media for too long", said Ken Wasch, SIIA president. "The industry needs to be able to present the world with a picture of its robust size and growth in order to maximize its impact on Wall Street and in the press."

"Both Outsell and SIIA share a passion for our industry and a deep commitment to its growth," said Anthea Stratigos, CEO and co-founder of Outsell. "Making market size and share information available is a fundamental underpinning to any industry having stature and visibility. In the data provided, we share a total view of the market size and contours of each segment and subsegment of the information industry and demonstrate to investors, customers and other stakeholders that we're an industry on the move."

The fast-growing, $250 billion information industry consists of companies that create, publish and aggregate content for the corporate, financial, medical, scientific, legal, education and training markets inclusive of all funding models-ad and sponsored, paid transaction and paid subscription. Outsell is reporting on industry segments that the SIIA Content Division Board of Directors defined over several months in 2004. These segments closely map with Outsell's view of the information industry, making for a natural partnership.

The table below provides the first Outsell analysis. The firm will share final 2004 estimates, including its annual market share rankings by sector, in May.
