Outsell Scales Down Information Industry Growth Projections - New Executive Report Advises CEOs to Have the “Guts” to Initiate Changes for Long-term Momentum

Burlingame, CA and London, UK—April 7, 2009—Outsell, Inc. scales down growth projections for the information industry because of the unprecedented economic downturn in a new report, “What is Good Performance in 2009?” The company is revising its 2009 “guidance” from late last year for eight key sectors, and even the fastest growing segments are not unscathed. These include search/aggregation/syndication (from 16.8 to 7.5 percent estimated growth), HR information (10.5 – 5.5 percent), education and training (7.0 - 5.5 percent), scientific/technical/medical information (8.2 – 5.1 percent), and non-IT market research, reports and services (9.5 – 5.0 percent). Overall, Outsell is projecting aggregate industry growth (excluding news companies) of 4.7 percent (or $391 billion in worldwide revenues), versus earlier estimates of 8.3 percent (or $400 billion).

“We believe the industry may be in further decline in 2010 because of lower renewal rates and contract values catching up in ratable revenue streams. Longer term, there will also be declines due to structural changes. These include the continued downfall of print advertising and the use of social media--in effect, a barter system because people are giving away information that they used to monetize,” said Anthea Stratigos, co-founder and CEO, Outsell.

The Outsell report provides a 2009 definition of a “growth company” in the information industry, and includes:
- Long-term implications of the shifting global economic foundation;
- Suggested norms and benchmarks for realistic budgets;
- Analysis of segment-by-segment dynamics;
- Essential actions for leaders dealing with the recession, including five essential ‘execution areas.’ Outsell continues to advise CEOs that this is the year of “no guts, no glory,” the time to initiate changes in their businesses that position them for long-term success.”
