Duke Students Add Economics 101 to Their iPod Playlists

In August 2004, incoming freshmen at Duke University were each given a 20GB Apple iPod with a Belkin voice recorder as part of the Duke Digital Initiative (DDI) to facilitate the adoption of technology into the classroom. Initially, iPod use was primarily limited to recording lectures and playing tracks for music classes. In the program’s third and fourth years, both students and faculty have become more sophisticated in incorporating digital technology into education, resulting in opportunities for academic computing vendors. Some of the challenges the Duke program continues to grapple with may also be transformed into vendor opportunities.
