A source at Microsoft has confirmed that the Washington Post is close to acquiring its online magazine Slate. Microsoft started Slate in 1996 as an experiment in online media; the magazine now claims to have 3.1 million users and won a 2003 National Magazine Award for general excellence online. The software giant is now cutting back on its media operations, however, to focus on its core business of writing software. It remains unclear what will happen to Slate's Redmond-based staff of 30 employees, mostly journalists, in the event of a sale.
