Top 15 US News Companies’ Print-to-Digital Market Size and Share

Author: Ken Doctor, Affiliate Analyst

The news industry has long lagged other kinds of publishers in finding new sustainable digital models. With digital at 12.9% of total revenues, News Providers & Publishers are behind the other information industry segments that Outsell covers. Education & Training, the next lowest segment, registers digital at 27.9% of total revenues. Still, the News percentage represents a 17% growth in digital revenues over 2008. In 2011, as various reader-paid digital content plans are tested and digital advertising is increasingly sold unbundled from print in various segments of the information industry, we’ll see a greater transition – the new print/digital or maybe digital/print hybrid will be more earnestly a work in progress. This report is the third in a series of print-to-digital transition reports, and contains:

- Data on the top 15 US News Providers & Publishers – revenue growth (total, ad, circulation, and online) and market share;
- An updated section on major drivers of the acceleration of print-to-digital, with an eye toward 2011, which promises to be a year of greater change;
- Essential actions for publishers focusing increasingly on digital revenue.
