Google Scholar and Microsoft Academic Search have both announced new functionalities, currently in beta, that cut across some of the features presented by commercial offerings such as Thomson Reuters' Web of Knowledge and Elsevier's Sciverse Scopus. Does this development signal the end of an era in the history of abstracting and indexing services, or it just a blip that can be safely ignored by commercial publishers?
