The Changing Roles Of Content Deployment Functions Part Three of a Seven-Part Series: Government & Public Information Professionals

Authors: Karen Wilson, Director & Lead Analyst; Richard Curtis, Vice President, Contracts & Licensing

This third Briefing in our seven-part benchmarking series, 'The Changing Roles Of Content Deployment Functions' focuses on Government & Public Information Professionals. This Briefing continues the annual Outsell series, 'The Changing Role Of The Information Professional,' and this year, the study has been expanded and renamed to reflect inclusion of other key content deployment functions, including government and public library information professionals. This data-intensive Briefing focuses on reporting structures, staffing trends, users served and services offered, content deployment methods, budget benchmarks, and strategic management and marketing practices. The number of users supported per information professional is far greater than that in any other segment we studied, while the average budget for these functions is only $19 to $24 per user, far lower than other segments. Key themes in this study of interest to both information professionals and content vendors include the need for innovative approaches to deal with the vast number of users with limited budgets and staff, the preeminent position of print even as electronic availability increases, and the need for strategic management and business planning.
