The Evolving Workplace: What Next for IM?

New paradigms are emerging for how we work. Increased mobility, multiple preferences for computing, delayed retirement, environmental impacts of 20th century behaviors, the cost of real estate, and the rise of virtual communities (coupled, ironically, with feelings of increased isolation) are just some of the elements driving change. This workplace evolution, which demands that information be integrated not just into workflow but also increasingly into “lifeflow,” requires new ways of thinking about and achieving information access, portability, integration, and delivery. These changes are busting apart the controlled, locked-down information flows of the 20th century.
