The predominant themes in 2001 - consolidation and rationalization - once again took center stage during the third quarter. The 41 mergers and acquisitions that took place far exceeded the 11 private investment transactions that were completed. Last year, during the third quarter of 2000, startups closed 54 venture capital transactions while just 11 education companies were acquired.
