This quarterly installment of The Education Investor offers a snapshot of first quarter private investment and M&A activity within the education industry. Private investment in education businesses surged 231% over the fourth quarter of 2003 to $82.7 million in the first quarter of 2004. This level of investment in the quarter topped quarterly investment totals across the last year, and exceeded the dollars invested in the third and fourth quarters of 2003 combined. Meanwhile, merger and acquisition activity moderated, declining from 32 announced transactions in the fourth quarter of 2003 to 22 in the first quarter of 2004.
