Position Description
Outsell is looking for an experienced, technologically savvy, and energetic Director & Lead Analyst to create innovative research and analysis about the STM segment and players in the information industry, to research and model key company statistics and metrics, and to work with our analytic and business development team to drive business in the space. As a core member of our market research and advisory business, the successful candidate will work in a collaborative environment and deliver executive-level analysis, including tracking and analyzing STM content companies and their customers and users, and providing strategy analysis and decision support to CEOs, COOs, and Marketing executives and their teams in publishing and information-provider companies. We are looking for a seasoned professional with STM domain expertise who has engaged in senior-level research, market analytics, or consulting and who has worked closely with C-level clients, or who has been employed by a commercial content vendor in an executive-level role, focused on marketing strategy, market analytics, or product management.
Key Responsibilities
The Director & Lead Analyst performs all core analyst functions, including research, analysis, metrics, and forecasting. In particular, this analyst will track, research, and regularly write about STM information publishers and providers, changing customer and end-user demands, and market dynamics, and will understand the impact of technology on the STM segment. Core responsibilities include the following: a) create marketable analysis and analytic deliverables in the form of written research reports, client advisories, consulting projects, and speaking engagements; b) be the press contact and Outsell spokesperson about the STM market; and c) work with sales to support business development efforts and expand our revenues in the STM space.
Responsibilities include:
- Have, at minimum, monthly dialogue with all STM clients and deliver proactive client care and analyst access. Track vendor offerings and how they match evolving market needs. Provide guidance to clients on emerging business and technology trends and the challenges and opportunities that they create.
- Track key STM vendors and how they stack up in terms of meeting market need. Advise vendors on competitive analysis and market opportunities, on the relative merits of available vendor offerings, and on best-practice applications for specific business processes.
- Act as product champion and revenue owner for the STM line of business and work with the Chief Analyst and Marketing to establish pricing, packaging, and go-to-market strategies and tactics. Drive the overall value proposition for new STM advisory subscription services and custom business by identifying needs of both commercial content vendors and players in STM, by fulfilling the research agenda, and by working closely with the analytics and sales teams to develop prospective clients.
- Research and write company and market analysis research reports (at least 10 per year, ranging from 2 to 20 pages) that are pertinent to STM and content-vendor executives and that will drive business for Outsell and establish it as a thought leader. Write two articles per week for Outsell’s Insights, satisfy client analyst-access requests, and develop strong client relationships, consistently demonstrating Outsell’s value.
- Be the “thought leader” in STM by representing Outsell in the space: speak at conferences, author articles, work on consulting projects, and be quoted in the trade and business press.
- Lead and facilitate strategy sessions with clients, understanding and tailoring Outsell’s analysis and recommendations to their specific issues.
- Lead and manage senior-level research projects with timeliness and excellence. Conduct analysis using multiple Outsell models, methodologies, frameworks, and solutions and develop new models and methodologies as needed.
- Contribute regularly and collaboratively to colleagues’ research projects.
Qualifications and Experience
- The candidate should possess strong STM industry, marketing, and technical knowledge and be able to analyze, identify, and forecast market trends, opportunity, and positioning. In-depth understanding and knowledge of specific STM segment players, issues, and trends is essential.
- Excellent writing and public speaking skills are critical, as are outstanding interpersonal and communication skills. Candidate must have demonstrated ability to network and interact at all levels of information industry vendor or buyer organizations (director, VP, CIO, CEO), and to represent and defend analysis in client interactions. Must be able to facilitate and develop visual concepts suited to conveying ideas to an executive audience. High-level relationship management skills, especially for interviewing senior managers, are required.
- Demonstrated critical thinking, analytical, and organizational skills are required, as is competency in challenging assumptions and developing opinions that are concise and complete in well-founded logic. Demonstrated track record in analyzing problems and developing models, methodologies, frameworks, and solutions at the executive level, both thinking creatively and delivering at a practical level.
- Graduate degree in business, finance, or marketing is preferred, as well as 10-15 years of experience as a senior-level executive in strategic marketing or business planning in the information industry, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be a proven leader – able to own a process, express ideas clearly and logically, meet deadlines, manage personal time successfully, deliver on an agreed timetable of commitments, manage multiple research and writing projects concurrently, deliver finished work on time, and work effectively under pressure. Creativity, curiosity, self-motivation, and perseverance are also essential.
- Candidate must be team-oriented, flexible, and able to work both independently and collaboratively in a firm whose team is largely based in home-office environments. Must have demonstrable contributing team-member skills and behaviors.
- Must be able to travel about 25% of the time.
- Ability to work in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, and experience in communicating knowledge through these programs, is critical.
