Position Description
The Director & Lead Analyst plays a leadership role in developing and supporting Outsell’s Postsecondary Education research agenda for clients. This individual scopes and writes a variety of syndicated research projects, publishes briefs for Insights, advises senior-level clients about their business, marketing, and competitive landscape, works with our sales team to drive business in this segment, and is a strategic partner to clients. The successful candidate will be an integral member of a team that delivers satisfied clients, top-notch research, and financial performance to the firm, and someone who enjoys the benefits of driving a business within a business while serving the education industry. The Director & Lead Analyst is committed to delivering the highest-quality service to support client satisfaction and retention as well as program growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with other team members to drive the syndicated research agenda necessary to satisfy clients and drive growth in our education coverage.
- Complete regular vendor briefings, research and author syndicated research reports and weekly Insights briefs, and deliver presentations to clients and at conferences. Reports focus on market size, share and forecast analysis of critical market sectors as well as company analysis of leading players and interesting market disruptors.
- Handle analyst access requests from clients who seek top-of-mind expertise about the postsecondary education segment.
- Understand critical market, competitive, and segment dynamics essential to monitoring and advising in the space.
- Manage research projects and staff (e.g., contractors).
- Use appropriate secondary and primary research methodologies to support research agenda objective(s) (e.g., searching databases and websites, conducting phone interviews, launching web surveys, mining and analyzing large datasets).
- Understand and set team financial goals; support business development activities; achieve service renewal rates.
- Represent Outsell’s market expertise at industry conferences, client meetings, and to the media.
- Support building group best practices and processes.
- Support knowledge management objective(s).
- Support collection of vendor and industry transactional information for inclusion in supplier database beyond the market size analysis that is the role’s core responsibility.
Qualifications and Experience
- Deep understanding and familiarity with the postsecondary education market and its sub-segments, important market players, competitive dynamics, and trends.
- Understanding of basic research methodologies, survey design, and statistical analysis, with experience doing market size, share, and forecasting in order to advance business decisions.
- Ability to analyze research results and transform this analysis into strong and clear graphics and business insights/recommendations.
- Excellent writing, oral communication, analytic, and project management skills.
- Strong interviewing and data analysis skills; proficiency with Excel (SPSS a plus).
- A self-starter with superior attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills.
- Able to work independently in an environment with multiple goals and projects while delivering quality work consistently and on schedule.
- Flexibility, with a positive response to new challenges and opportunities.
- Strong leadership and people skills; able to manage people, projects and processes.
- Demonstrated maturity and professionalism.
- Ability to execute on Outsell’s core values.
- 6-10 years of professional research/analytical experience.
- Master’s degree preferred (e.g., Business, Education, Statistics).

Compensation and Benefits
Compensation includes a combination of base salary, bonus, and stock options. Location is wherever the candidate lives, as the firm has a small headquarters in Burlingame, California, with the majority of employees in a home-based work environment.
