Position Description

Outsell, Inc. is looking for an experienced leader to assume Director of Finance responsibilities. The successful candidate will provide financial oversight, management, and reporting for this global and growing company, working closely with the firm’s co-founders and leadership team to plan and ensure the financial health of this organically funded firm.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership team member: The Director of Finance is an active participant in the leadership team at Outsell, Inc. Meetings include weekly stand-up meetings, monthly operations reviews, and quarterly and annual planning. This person also attends and presents at all-hands meetings.
  • Financial reporting: Prepare, analyze, and distribute financial reports weekly and monthly to the leadership team. Discuss financial implications and provide recommendations.
  • Forecasting & cash flow analysis: Oversee, prepare, and maintain a consolidated global cash forecast that is used by the Operations Team in planning the business. The Director of Finance meets with individual members of the leadership team monthly to review their forecast and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Budgeting: Work with the CEO in overseeing the annual budget process and prepare necessary records for budget owners to plan annual budgets. This includes working with the VP of Sales and P&L owners to prepare a top-down sales forecast, then working closely with budget owners to prepare a consolidated and reasonable budget. Maintain and update the budget as necessary throughout the year.
  • Invoicing: Initial duties will include preparing invoices, though this will be transitioned to an accounts receivable professional once training and oversight is complete.
  • Collections: Oversee collections functions and routines to ensure timely payment of accounts receivable in our UK and US offices.
  • Backlog: Maintain the current backlog report. Closely monitor sales not yet invoiced and follow up with the appropriate Outsell team to determine when invoices can be generated. Understand backlog dynamics as it pertains to forecasting.
  • Deferred revenue: Calculate and post monthly journal entries to recognize and defer revenue for subscriptions and events. Understand deferred revenue dynamics as it relates to forecast.
  • Completion percentage: Calculate at month-end the amount of revenue earned on custom projects based on the completion percentage.
  • Commissions & accounts payable: Calculate and oversee payment of commissions and coordinate with US and UK offices to ensure accurate remittance in payroll. Oversee timely payment of accounts payable obligations and ensure compliance in employee expense reimbursements.
  • Monthly closing: Reconciliate General Ledger accounts.
  • Financial statement review/taxes: Accumulate information necessary for the accountants to prepare the reviewed financials and the income tax returns.
  • Transfer pricing: Implement transfer pricing mechanisms and maintain monthly entries.
  • Supervision of accounting/human resources: Supervise and manage the office administration, accounting staff, and HR functions in the UK and the US.
  • Bank compliance: Prepare and review on a monthly basis all bank compliance reporting; closely monitor ratios to ascertain and ensure compliance with bank covenants.
  • Bank audit: Take the lead in the accumulation of data and process oversight necessary to perform the yearly bank audits.
  • Stock options/cap table: Update and maintain stock options program detail as well as the cap table. Prepare valuations as necessary and in keeping with standard company methodology.
  • Projects: Work with the CEO and company founders on projects that may be necessary throughout the year and which may include financing and corporate development related activity.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Accounting or Business, with a CPA preferred. Experience in entrepreneurial, fast-changing environments and overseeing the development of finance and administration functions.
  • Experience managing finance functions in multiple geographies, with UK experience preferred.
  • Highly organized, with demonstrated experience solving problems quickly and creatively. Understands and drives for improvements and simplicity in accounting processes. Direct experience setting up and streamlining functions, especially in a growing organization.
  • Able to speak and work with executives directly, concretely, and easily, while being hands-on, comfortable, and facile with detail.
  • Team-oriented, flexible, and able to work both independently and collaboratively in a firm where most employees work in home-based offices.
  • Ability to work in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; direct experience with NetSuite and Sage, and overall comfort with technology.
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, and communication skills, as well as demonstrated ability to present information succinctly and, where possible, visually.

Compensation includes a combination of base salary, variable compensation, and stock options. We offer health and life insurance, disability, and a 401(k) plan.
